I would like to posit something here.. What if .. a hundred + years ago, you had a group of people who wanted to enjoy the beauty of the woods and include drama, art, and manic partying, .. this sounds like it might be enjoyable. .. Perhaps later on members of the Bohemian Grove organizing committee ( I don't know if this existed, .. just speculating) wanted to "improve" their image of partying bohemian drama geeks by asking people to come to their forest party weekend and give talks on matters of interest of the day. This may have then further evolved, as their membership evolved to encourage more famous speakers.
Their own dramatics may have begun as those of many fraternal organizations of the day did, to set the tone of the weekend, and state the basic message of their "get together" in a way that would be involved, entertaining, and hold the interest of those attending. This may make the Ceremony of the Cremation of Care a way to put the idea of "noblesse oblige" which WAS a powerful force "..back in the day.." in a box for the weekend to allow one to party without worrying over others less blessed .. for a time.
This, of course, is pure speculation but I believe it may have some truth in that it allows those originators to be human beings, and does not demonize those who attend this even now. I've never had the pleasure to attend one of those gatherings, but I have to admit that were I invited, I would go! If anything.. just to see what the inner context might be.
