Second, good short history of the origines of the Book of Mormon, Hank. However, and I might be wrong, I don't think the tribe that left Jerusalem and went to the new world was one of the 10 lost tribes of Isreal. But I could be wrong. Just for some reason, I never got that impression before.

Thanks. i've had the occasion to do a little research on the golden plates. i admit i could be wrong about the lost tribe thing, but seem to recall that info in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism. i'd have to go to the library to look it up. won't be going there again until late August. Though there are plenty of citations in google for lds and "lost tribe of isreal."

No one knows. But that answer is what prompted Smith to start the LDS. His family (and thus he) were surrounded by different denominations of christian churches. They were religious people. His mother went every Sunday to Presbyterian and Methodist churches. His father had long since passed on church going but prayed to the God of Jesus every day. Smith had grown tired of the exclusivism. A vision told him that the dogma of all the churchs were wrong. And showed him the golden plates to prove it.

Yeah, getting baptised is a lot more fun than following some blind maniacal leader. Baptism is sort of like swimming after all!
