The next 11-year solar storm cycle should be significantly stronger than the current one, which may mean big problems for power grids and GPS systems and other satellite-enabled technology, scientists announced today.

The stronger solar storms could start as early as this year or as late as 2008 and should peak around 2012.

The last cycle peaked in 2001.

A new technique enabled the scientists to better predict the severity of the next cycle. The technique, called helioseismology, allows researchers to "see" inside the sun by tracing sound waves reverberating inside the sun—creating a picture of the interior like ultrasound creates a picture of an unborn baby.

"For the first time we can predict the strength of the 11-year solar activity cycle using computer simulations of the sun's physics," Dikpati said.

It's in the 30's at night.

It's in the 60's, sometimes even the lower 70's, midday.

V-E-R-Y weird, for here in South Carolina.

It's been an abnormally mild winter here. There's usually a stretch of cooler weather, where the temperature gets down to the low 40s during daylight hours, but that has been extremely rare this year. I hear the cherry blossoms are expected to come into bloom a week or two early.

Don't think it's really been unusually cold, but it has been windy for two months.

The week of sub-freezing temperatures did catch some people off-guard - like the guys responsible for firing up the windmills and keeping water on the citrus. The lettuce and broccoli survived, but Dole just wrote off the entire citrus crop.

Maybe we'll have citrus next year. Maybe not till the following year.

Gonna be a bad stretch for Screwdrivers and Tequila Sunrises.
