Dave McGowan
Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon
2 Hours, 2 Minutes

In our first LIVE episode of Season IX, BoA:Audio ventures to southern California in the 1960s and early 1970s with our guest Dave McGowan, author of Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon: Laurel Canyon, Covert Ops & the Dark Heart of the Hippie Dream. Over the course of this expansive conversation, we discuss the unique mix of personalities which resided in Laurel Canyon and helped launched the counterculture movement as well as why this whole turn of events looks, in retrospect, highly suspicious. We'll also learn about the historically forgotten originators of the hippie aesthetic, the secret government movie studio located in Laurel Canyon, a bizarre Nazi compound built in another nearby canyon, and other oddities from the area.

Altogether, it's a compelling edition of the program which will likely have you taking a second look at the early days of rock music and wondering if hidden influences played a hand in shaping that historic era.

Highlights: We find out the origins of Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon and the unique nature of the story told in the book as well as get the standard bio / background on Dave McGowan. This leads to a brief side tangent on the Lincoln assassination and then some talk about how Weird Scenes has inspired numerous requests for Dave to examine other eras of rock music.

We examine the central thesis of the book which asks if the musicians that emerged from California's Laurel Canyon in the 1960's were part of an intelligence scheme to control the counterculture movement. This leads to some talk about the various trends which seem to surround these musicians which, taken together, make history's turn of events look very suspicious.

Dave also details how a slew of legendary actors like Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, and Marlon Brando were also a part of the burgeoning artistic community of the era and also shared similar intelligence ties. Adding to this mix of intriguing characters, we also have Charles Manson involved in the scene as well, which leads to some talk about the undercurrent of violence which existed in Laurel Canyon in the days of Flower Power.

Following that, we learn about two historically forgotten characters, Vito Paulekas and Carl Fanzoni, who seemingly started the hippie aesthetic which their strange band of followers as well as played a pivotal role in raising awareness of these new bands which spawned the counterculture movement. Dave also reflects on how the allegedly counterculture movement was clearly helped at the very beginning by the mainstream media.

Next we learn about Lookout Mountain Laboratories, an elaborate and secret government movie studio which was located in Laurel Canyon during this era as well. Looking at another trend which emerges from the book, we get Dave's take on the recurring theme of houses of some renown (or with famous tenants) ending up burned to the ground.

We revisit Charles Manson during the era and reflect on how he very well could have ended up a famous musician rather than an infamous cult leader, since he had numerous close ties to the legendary musicians that eventually became superstars.

Additionally, we discuss another oddity which Dave noticed while researching the book, which is that numerous people featured in the book had one or both of their parents commit suicide. This leads to some talk about Dave's suspicions about Hollywood suicides.

Painting a picture for the listeners, we have Dave describe how big Laurel Canyon is and how its diminutive size makes it all the more bizarre for its role in shaping music and entertainment history. We also learn about when and why Laurel Canyon stopped being the epicenter for the counterculture movement.

Dave then tells us about the strange ruins of a secret compound that was built in LA's Rustic Canyon and he shares the story of a visit there recently where someone had to be evacuated from the area via helicopter. Jumping back to the counterculture era, we talk about how some of the biggest stars were actually politically opposed to or openly contemptuous of the movement.

Nearing the close of the conversation, we talk about delve into the bizarre connection between the Manson Family and Angela Lansbury, of all people. We also find out about Kenneth Anger, who makes a few appearances in Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon. Looking ahead to 2015, we find out if Dave plans on publishing his Lincoln research in book form as well as what other projects he may be working on at the moment.

This interview was recorded LIVE on 2/12/2015.

Dave always keeps his cards very close to his vest in these interviews, and I think he shouldn't. His writings strongly hint at a lot more than he seems willing to assert when on radio shows. This is probably because he recognizes that elaborating on what appears to be the truth would be so horrifying and so difficult for those who aren't already aware that things are not as they seem to be.

I strongly recommend Programmed to Kill and Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon. I would never compare Dave to Fritz Springmeier, who I have deep suspicions about. However, the kind of nightmarish realities painted by people like Springmeier, Downard and O'Brien (where they concern mind control programs, the occult and the underside of 'high society') appear hysterical to most folks. Dave looks at the well-established facts that are part of the record and presents you with a plethora of disturbing clues that suggest perhaps the terrifying world those "conspiracy theorists" paint in their "hysterical" books isn't as different from reality as we'd like to believe

I also think his focus on the military intelligence community as the driving force behind much of this is bang on, as well as his view of that element as virtually indistinguishable from the global elite personified by the major international corporations and the ruling classes. He is correct that military intelligence has long maintained an incestuous relationship with the occult underground. There is reams of evidence to support this charge, and anyone who doubts it should read about Project MKOFTEN.

Quote:
According to author Gordon Thomas' 2007 book, Secrets and Lies, the CIA's Operation Often was also initiated by the chief of the CIA's Technical Services Branch, Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, to "explore the world of black magic" and "harness the forces of darkness and challenge the concept that the inner reaches of the mind are beyond reach". As part of Operation Often, Dr. Gottlieb and other CIA employees visited with and recruited fortune-tellers, palm-readers, clairvoyants, astrologists, mediums, psychics, specialists in demonology, witches and warlocks, Satanists, other occult practitioners, and more.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_MKOFTEN

Dr. Gottlieb, of course, was the overseer of MKULTRA during its best-documented period. And Psychic Dictatorship in the U.S.A. by Alex Constantine names Dr. Stephen Aldrich, who succeeded Gottlieb as the director of the CIA's Office of Research and Development and who was also a major figure in their mind control projects, as a major figure in Operation Often. He also states that the Scientific Engineering Institute (SEI), a CIA front in Boston, sponsored the establishment of a laboratory for occult research at the University of Southern Carolina, and that entire classes of CIA personnel were trained in the dark arts here. Sybil Leek, a prominent witch, was recruited as a technical advisor. The SEI is familiar to anyone who has researched MKULTRA as a major funding cover for mind control research.

These are only a few sample indications that government research into 'behavior modification' and the occult have always been closely interlinked. And when you think about it, why wouldn't they be? MKULTRA scientifically refined the concept of bewitchment.

Quote:
Bewitching

: to use magic to make someone do, think, or say something

: to put (someone) under a spell

: to attract or delight (someone) in a way that seems magical

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bewitching

And I strongly believe that the nexus where 'behavior modification' research, occult research and government intelligence operations meet is the true reason why we have scores of people claiming to have been survivors of brutal ritual abuse. It's no secret that the infliction of extreme trauma is one of the oldest and most effective methods of behavior modification, and indeed men like George Estabrooks who were leading figures in these programs have openly written about that. Is it not strange that the False Memory Syndrome Foundation, the group fronting the effort to discredit the accounts of these ritual abuse survivors, is stacked with military intelligence luminaries who have documented histories in MKULTRA research? Is it not strange that the most visible among the Satanic cults, to which such ritual abuse is generally attributed, have documented ties to the military intelligence community?

Remember that the seemingly large amount of declassified documents relating to government mind control research are simply the few that missed the paper shredder. MKULTRA was the tip of the iceberg.

Interesting or not IDK.

Just a quick wikipedia search on Lookout Mountantain Laboratories:
Jan 2015 it was bought by Jared Leto for $5 mil. A click on Jared Leto one finds that his mother who has Cajun ancestry was in the "hippie movement" and he lived with mother and grandparents. He moved around alot since his grandfather was in the Air Force. His real father remarried and committed suicide when he was eight.

These things seem to follow these people apparently.
