The stone tape theory could explain many ghost sightings. Here is a link to an article about the theory, "Stone Tape Theory: An Exploration":

http://www.p-s-i.org.uk/stonetapearticle.htm

Here is an extract from the article:

"The so-called “stone tape theory” is a term often used by paranormal enthusiasts and has a place in most paranormal investigator’s dictionary. Briefly the theory follows that a scene or event, often of a powerfully emotional or tragic nature, is somehow captured within the stonework of a location and replays – like a tape – events at certain times in a fixed location, to certain people or under certain circumstances. The resulting “ghosts” are said to be in no way sentient, they simply carry out a pre-defined set of actions."

So what is a stone tape recording (if such a thing is possible)?
My own understanding is that it is the recording of a human memory stored in stone somehow, a kind of psychic video tape or dvd. I think intense emotion in particular fear may play a part in making the recording. So when someone sees one of these recordings they are not seeing the dead spirit of someone, they are simply replaying the memory of someone else that has somehow been stored in the stone.

I want to know if anyone has any idea how stone could record someone's memory and be played back in someone else's mind, perhaps on some very very simple level stone has some form of consciousness. Perhaps it would help if someone could explain how a dvd or video tape can store sound and picture and how this is played on a video or dvd player.

Any ideas?

I'm willing to give most paranormal ideas a chance. But this idea of stones recording memories just seems like it came from The Weekly World News.

Would stones be able to record your thoughts if you wore a tin foil hat?

I know it sounds very unlikely but many paranormal enthusiasts believe there could be something to this theory. Stone is made from basically the same stuff at an atomic level as video tape, so the idea that it can record data isn't really that ridiculas when you think about it.

You should watch the 1972 BBC tv play ‘The Stone Tape’ written by Nigel Kneale, the father of TV Sci-Fi, you can get it on dvd.
