What mag would you suggest for a 13 year old who is interested - - - but we don't want to scare his mom (my kid) - - - because she fears it - - - she's kind of a moderate Christian type.

At that age, I was reading "Fate". but those were old even 25+ years ago!

I was going to suggest "Fate" as well. It's not too extreme and covers a lot of various esoteric niches.
