I've never been much of a PC gamer, I don't know it's just that there's something about sitting back and playing a game on the TV that has a certain feel to it. Still, with all the stuff I'm hearing about Starcraft 2 I'm thinking about giving the first one a shot since they have it and it's expansion pack for $20 (along with the strategy guides). So anyone play it before and is it worth getting if you never really played many RTS games?

Haven't picked up SC II yet because I'm broke, but the original is an RTS classic. It's one of those deals that's easy to learn but difficult to master, so the early going is quite intuitive and you get walked through tutorial missions in the beginning, so you don't really need any past history with the RTS genre as long as you grace the basic concept.

I spent many an hour playing it, and it was innovative at the time in that each race had a completely unique play style. Before in RTS games, opposing factions were mostly just different graphically with the odd unique unit here and there, but SC gave you three completely different ways to play the game, which really adds to its replayabilty. Obvious graphics issue aside, it's a game that holds up REALLY well even over a decade later. One of my favorites and I really recommend it. I'll bepicking up SC II as soon as I get some extra cash.

Starcraft is too repetitive. Ya its fun to build up your colony and upgrade them up and wipe your enemy clean, but once you beat one game playing another loses its fun value. Unless ofcourse you play against a human enemy but then you have to worry about how bad everyone else kicks your ass. If I was to play a RTS I would choose Age Of Empires. But in all reality Sid Meiers Civilization is way better than any RTS. :D
