The United States of Esoterica

What did you all think of this year in music? I found it generally lacking, but with a couple real gems nonetheless.

Portishead's "Third" absolutely takes the prize as my favorite of 2008, and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds "Dig Lazarus Dig" comes in at a very, very distant second.

For me it would have to be Motley Crue's Saints of Los Angeles.

all the really good music was made many years ago. it seems no one knows how to make good music anymore.

lots of new good music is made, and plenty without the need for those irritating drum beats.

Seconded. Also, Division by 10 Years. They're the only '08 albums I still regularly listen to.

An underrated album. Shouldn't have taken 14 years to get done though.

No, probably not. Something I read recently said the album was finished in 2002, but when they brought in Roy Thomas Baker to produce, he made them re-record a lot of finished material.
