Sad news. His tag team with Terry Gordy (and previous feud w. Gordy) was something to behold. I'll never forget the Williams / Gordy v. Steiner Brothers matches in WCW in the early 1990's, as they were truly epic.

Pro wrestling great Steve "Dr. Death" Williams died on Tuesday night at age 49. He has been battling cancer in recent years. Williams held numerous wrestling titles in North America and Japan throughout his career. He achieved All-American status as a football player at the University of Oklahoma.

Dude was a bit of a legend around these parts. When he was first diagnosed with cancer it even made the local news in Shreveport (where I assume he was still living. He was as of a few years ago).

Hard to believe he was only 49. It's sort of sad that the only real national exposure he got in the 90's was that horrible "Brawl for All" disaster. He was a good worker.

I absolutely lost it watching this video, apparently his last U.S. match, from August. And the last 20 seconds or so, served as goodbye to fans. Fuck.

Wow, that was really rough to watch, but it was great seeing him get the props he deserved. I think he's one of the few guys I've never heard a ill-word about. He was supposedly as nice as he was tough.

I'll never forget watching Dr. Death and Ted DiBiase back in the Mid-South days. We could barely pick up the show -- remember fuzzy screens from out of town channels? -- but every Friday night I'd be there trying to get the rabbit ears to get a clearer picture.

And MId-South made me realize the territories were so much better than that shit the WWF was doing back in the early 80s.

I watched a bunch of youtube videos with Williams last night.

and of course, Williams-Kenta Kobashi, 1993.
