If you haven't seen any of the films or TV shows written by Nigel Kneale your missing out big time. In Great Britain at least he is considered the father of TV sci-fi, without him there would have been no "X-files".
Much of his work is about the paranormal, the juxtaposition of science and superstition is a frequent theme in Kneale's work, particularly in "The Stone Tape" and "Quatermass and the Pit".

"The Stone Tape" involves a team of electronics experts who move into an old Victorian house to conduct recording research. After an apparition appears by a stone wall, the scientists attempt to analyse and exorcise it. That's when bad things start to happen....

In "Quatermass and the Pit" Workers renovating the London Underground discover what they at first take to be an unexploded World War II bomb. On closer inspection it turns out to be a great deal more mysterious - a spaceship, millions of years old, bearing the fossilized bodies of dead aliens. Professor Quatermass is brought in to bring to light this disturbing discovery, which turns out to have unforeseen effects on the local populace.

People should watch the "Quatermass" serials and Hammer films, "The Quatermass Experiment", "Quatermass II", and the best "Quatermass and the Pit". You should also watch "The Stone Tape" (1972), "Nineteen Eighty-Four" (1954) and "The Abominable Snowman" (1957).
